Tough Start

Laugharne 30 Aberaeron 23

Promotion credentials were very much was at stake in this season's opener with the runnersup in the last campaign aiming to go one step further this term. Of late Laugharne have become the Seagulls bogey team especially on home ground and they maintained that grip with an accomplished display with only a solo performance from outside half Rhodri Jenkins mere compensation in ensuring a losing bonus point. The visitors would have been in confident mood following the previous week's success and the initial forays continued where they left off in Cardigan. Early discretion brought reward when errors in the home ranks allowed Rhodri Jenkins to stroke home the first of his three penalties. Within minutes he had added a converted try to his tally capitalising on a clean gap in the home defence to extend the lead to ten points. And for the early stages there were little signs of a response from the hosts but with half time beckoning there were given a lifeline as a series of penalties and missed tackles by Aberaeron allowed the unlikely hint of a fightback and they duly capitalised with a close range try by centre Tm Jameson which was converted by Steff Davies. The half time pep talk should have served as a reminder of the need to maintain focus but within minutes of the restart more defensive frailties allowed Laugharne to work their way upfield and Will Evans was at hand to cross near the posts for the easy conversion to take a four point lead. It was clear at this point that confidence in the home ranks was on the increase and another try was the result of some expansive play from the efficient home backline allowing Mikey Williams the opening to cross the whitewash. To their credit Aberaeron were always looking for the openings but on more than one occasion they failed to capitalise on promising moves with mishandling causing frustration. Jenkins was always a threat with the boot and he reduced the deficit with his second penalty only for Laugharne to respond immediately with another converted try. With seemingly all lost a hint of a fightback materialised as Jenkins weaved his way over the line and add the conversion to reduce the deficit to seven points. The bonus point seemed lost as Jameson added another penalty but a difficult but composed last gasp Jenkins penalty ensured that the bonus point remained intact. Now to regroup for the local derby with Llanybydder.
