Aberaeron 7 Haverforwest 18
Saturday saw the euphoria of the previous weekend soon became a distant memory as Aberaeron succumbed to a well drilled Haverfordwest outfit determined to banish the history of last season's relegation. Eager to capitalise on their fine start to the campaign, Aberaeron aimed to continue their new found expansive play, but they came up against strong opposition who were able to cover any would be breaks whilst also capable of capitalising efficiently on any breakdowns. The first half was evenly balanced and it was the offensive counter display that gave the Pembs outfit the advantage at the break. After an early penalty by Gareth John, the visitors showed their ambition and were rewarded with two tries from Ben Skudder, after the openings were created from deep, for the winger to be on hand to cross to give his side a healthy advantage of fifteen points at the half way stage. With a gusting wind at Parc Drefach, the second half developed into a dour affair with the visitors content to defend in deep and Aberaeron frustratingly unable to capitalise on several golden opportunities. The front row of Danton, Wozencraft and débutante Ryan Williams will take credit in gaining set piece possession whilst flanker Aaron Lewis was unfortunate not to put points on the board with several forays in attack. In the end it was left to Gareth James to gain a glimmer of hope and it was the scrum half who crowned a combative and forceful afternoon with a try converted by Rhodri Jenkins. Much pressure on the visitors line, together with an over fussy referee resulted in frustration for the reminder of the game which was further enhanced as John capitalised on a rare visit to home territory with a well converted penalty. Further opportunities for Aberaeron fell by the wayside and they were to reflect on missed opportunities but more so the need to adapt to stronger opposition, lessons that will no doubt be taken on board by the coaching staff for future development.
