Aberaeron 31 Furnace 16

Saturday saw Aberaeron duly complete their league campaign with a well earned double over Furnace. On a lovely spring afternoon with the pitch in perfect condition, the disrupted campaign finally came to an end with the result unfortunately having no bearing on the final standings. Nevertheless the victory serves to prove the talent within the squad with much anticipation and confidence for next year where hopefully coach Justin Lloyd will have a target to aim for. For the neutral this was an entertaining game of rugby with the final result in the balance until the final quarter, until the home team's forward power broke the visitors dour defence.

The opening period had been an even affair with initially Aberaeron taking control through one of the tries of the season. A recontorolled fumble by fullback Rhodri Thomas released centre Ollie Sawyer on a mazy run and a strong foray by man of the match Alistair Severs found an interchange with Tudur Jenkins to release wing Niall Read for the opening score. Furnace fought back and a penalty from Jamie Herbert was followed by a converted try by Nick Stephenson to give the visitors the lead at the break.

Aberaeron regained parity minutes into the second period with an opportunistic try by Sean Stephens, gathering his own subtle chip to claim the score and following a period of pressure they regained the lead with a try by fellow flanker Aaron Lewis, which was converted by Rhodri Jenkins. Indecision and incorrect option taking allowed Furnace a glimmer of hope and a couple of penalties brought the deficit back to a single point, but the hosts finally relieved the tension with stalwart Gethin Hughes the benefactor of forward pressure followed by a second by Lewis, both converted expertly from wide out by Jenkins. With the league over, attention now turns the West 3 Cup where silverware will be on the agenda to crown the season's efforts.
